Refresher driving lessons
For licence holders returning to driving after a break, or driving an unfamiliar car.
Refresher lessons are for people who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, are moving from automatic to manual (or the other way round), or have lost confidence after an incident. There is no fixed number of hours — a good instructor will assess where you are in the first session and tell you honestly what you need.
Who it's for
- You have not driven for months or years
- You are switching transmission or car size
- You are returning after an incident or a break from driving
What it covers
- Assessment drive
- Rebuilding core control
- Busy junctions and roundabouts
- Modern road layouts and signage
- Independent driving and navigation
Who can take it
- You hold a full GB or exchangeable licence — refresher lessons are for licence holders, not learners.
- You can drive the instructor's car, or your own if it is insured for instruction.
- If your licence has lapsed or been revoked, sort that out with the DVLA first; an instructor cannot work around it.
What a session looks like
- The first session is usually an assessment drive so the instructor can see where you actually are, rather than assume.
- A plan follows: often core control first, then junctions and roundabouts, then busier roads and independent driving.
- Two hours at a time suits most returning drivers better than an hour.
- Typical need is a handful of hours, but people returning after many years often want more — you should be told honestly, not sold a package.
How booking works
Tell us your area and what you want. DriveBooked looks for a verified, active instructor who covers that area and has confirmed they offer refresher driving lessons. Nothing is reserved when you enquire, and if nobody suitable covers your area we will say so rather than pass your details on.
Tuition is arranged with, and paid directly to, the independent instructor. DriveBooked charges no arrangement fee for this service at present.
Refresher driving lessons questions
- How many refresher lessons will I need?
- It depends entirely on how long you have been away and how confident you feel. Many drivers need two to six hours; some need more. Your instructor assesses you first and should tell you plainly rather than quote a fixed course.
- Can I use my own car?
- Often yes, provided it is roadworthy and insured for driving instruction. Ask the instructor when you speak to them — many prefer their own dual-control car for the first session.
- I am switching from automatic to manual. Is that a refresher?
- If you hold an automatic-only licence you must pass a manual practical test to drive a manual car, so that is lessons and a test rather than a refresher. If you already hold a manual licence and have simply not used a clutch for years, a refresher is exactly right.
