Motorway confidence lessons
Supervised motorway driving for full licence holders, or motorway lessons for learners where legally permitted.
Motorway driving is the part of the road network most new drivers avoid. These lessons build confidence with joining and leaving, lane discipline, matching speed, safe following distances, smart motorways and what to do if something goes wrong. Learner drivers may only drive on a motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car, so your instructor will confirm what is appropriate for your licence.
Who it's for
- You passed your test but have never used a motorway
- You have a new commute or long journey coming up
- You want to practise high-speed lane discipline safely
What it covers
- Joining and leaving safely
- Lane discipline and overtaking
- Following distances and speed matching
- Smart motorways and signage
- Breakdowns and emergency areas
Who can take it
- Full licence holders can take motorway lessons in any suitable car with an instructor.
- Learner drivers may only drive on a motorway in Great Britain with an approved driving instructor, in a car fitted with dual controls — and only when the instructor judges them ready.
- Motorway lessons for learners are voluntary; they are not part of the practical test.
What a session looks like
- A short briefing before you set off: signage, lane discipline, speed limits and what a smart motorway changes.
- A route that includes at least one full join and exit, ideally more than one junction type.
- Practice at holding a steady position and safe following distance in traffic.
- Discussion of breakdowns, emergency areas and red X signals — usually explained rather than rehearsed.
- Most people book one or two sessions of two hours or so; a single 45-minute lesson rarely gets you far enough onto a motorway to be useful.
How booking works
Tell us your area and what you want. DriveBooked looks for a verified, active instructor who covers that area and has confirmed they offer motorway confidence lessons. Nothing is reserved when you enquire, and if nobody suitable covers your area we will say so rather than pass your details on.
Tuition is arranged with, and paid directly to, the independent instructor. DriveBooked charges no arrangement fee for this service at present.
Motorway confidence lessons questions
- Can I take a motorway lesson before I pass my test?
- Yes, but only with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car, and only if the instructor thinks you are ready. It is optional and never part of the practical test.
- How many motorway lessons do I need?
- There is no set number. Most drivers who simply want to stop avoiding motorways feel much better after one or two longer sessions, but your instructor will tell you honestly what they think after driving with you.
- What if there is no motorway near me?
- Your instructor may suggest starting on a dual carriageway with similar joining and lane-discipline demands, then travelling to the nearest motorway once you are comfortable.
