Preparing for the theory test
6 min read
The UK car theory test has two parts taken in one sitting: 50 multiple-choice questions (pass mark 43) and a hazard perception test of 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards (pass mark 44 out of 75). You must pass both parts in the same attempt, and the pass certificate is valid for two years — your practical test must be taken within that period.
How the test is structured
You take both parts on the same visit. The multiple-choice section comes first, with an optional short break before hazard perception.
- Multiple choice: 50 questions, 57 minutes, pass mark 43
- Hazard perception: 14 clips, 15 scoreable hazards, pass mark 44 of 75
- Both parts must be passed in the same sitting
- Certificate validity: two years
Revise from the official sources
The question bank is based on The Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs and the DVSA's official learning materials. Free and paid apps can be useful for drilling, but if an app disagrees with The Highway Code, The Highway Code wins.
DriveBooked does not sell theory test materials or courses, and we have no affiliate arrangements with anyone who does.
Hazard perception: what people get wrong
You score by clicking as a hazard begins to develop — that is, when something changes that would make you slow down or change course. Clicking constantly to cover yourself scores zero for that clip, because the system detects a repeating pattern.
Practise the timing, not just the spotting. One clip contains two scoreable hazards; the rest contain one.
On the day
Bring your provisional photocard licence — without it the test will not go ahead and you will lose the fee. Arrive early, and expect airport-style rules on phones and bags. If you have a reading difficulty or another condition affecting the test, tell DVSA when booking: extra time and support such as a reader or a voiceover in English or Welsh can be arranged.
Common questions
- Do I need to pass the theory test before starting lessons?
- No. You can start lessons as soon as you hold a provisional licence. You need the theory certificate before you can book the practical test.
- What happens if my theory certificate expires?
- You must take and pass the theory test again. There are no extensions, so plan the practical test well inside the two-year window.
- How soon can I retake a failed theory test?
- You must wait at least three clear working days before taking it again, and pay the fee again.
