How to choose a driving instructor

6 min read

Choose a driving instructor by checking their DVSA badge (a green ADI badge means fully qualified; a pink badge means a trainee PDI), confirming transmission, price per hour, lesson length and cancellation terms in writing, and judging whether their teaching style suits you after one or two lessons rather than committing to a large block up front.

Check the badge first

Every legal paid driving instructor in Great Britain displays a DVSA badge in the windscreen. A green badge means an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who has passed all three qualifying parts. A pink badge means a trainee (PDI) working under a trainee licence — that is legal and many PDIs teach well, but you should know which you are getting.

You can ask to see the badge. A professional instructor will not mind at all.

  • Green badge — fully qualified ADI
  • Pink badge — trainee licence holder (PDI)
  • No badge on a paid lesson — walk away

Agree the commercial terms before you start

Most disputes between learners and instructors are about money and time, not driving. Get the basics agreed in a message you can refer back to.

  • Hourly rate, and whether block bookings are discounted
  • Lesson length, and whether pick-up and drop-off count as lesson time
  • How much notice you must give to cancel without paying
  • Whether the instructor's car can be used for the test, and at what cost
  • How refunds work if you have prepaid for hours you do not use

Judge the teaching, not the sales pitch

After one or two lessons you should be able to say what you did well, what you need to work on, and what the next lesson will cover. If you cannot, that is useful information.

Beware of anyone guaranteeing a pass, promising an unrealistically small number of hours, or pressuring you into paying for a large block before you have driven with them. DVSA figures consistently show most learners need a substantial amount of practice — anyone promising a shortcut is selling, not teaching.

How DriveBooked fits in

DriveBooked is a booking and matching service. We check an instructor's identity, badge status, insurance and vehicle declarations before they can receive work, and we match your request to a verified instructor covering your area. Tuition is arranged and paid directly with that independent instructor, who keeps 100% of it. Our fee is separate and clearly shown before you pay anything.

Common questions

Is a PDI worse than an ADI?
Not necessarily. A PDI is a trainee working under a DVSA trainee licence and is often taught closely supervised, current methods. The difference is qualification stage, not automatically quality — but you are entitled to know which you are booking.
Should I pay for a block of lessons up front?
Only once you know the instructor suits you, and only when the refund terms for unused hours are clear in writing. Paying for a large block before your first lesson carries real risk.
Can I change instructor part-way through?
Yes. You are not tied to anyone. Ask for a summary of your progress so your new instructor does not have to start from scratch.
