Preparing for your first driving lesson
5 min read
For your first driving lesson bring your provisional licence, wear flat comfortable shoes, and expect the lesson to start with a licence check and an eyesight check (reading a number plate at 20 metres), then cockpit drill, controls, moving off and stopping in a quiet area. You will not be expected to know anything in advance.
What you must have
You cannot legally drive without a valid provisional licence, and your instructor must see it. If you have applied but the card has not arrived, tell them before the lesson rather than on the day.
- Your provisional driving licence (photocard)
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read a number plate at 20 metres
- Flat shoes with thin soles — no heavy boots, heels or flip-flops
- Your instructor's contact number, in case of delays
What normally happens
A first lesson is usually calm and slower than people expect. Your instructor will drive you to a quiet area before you take the wheel.
- Licence check and eyesight check
- Cockpit drill — doors, seat, steering, seatbelt, mirrors
- The main controls and what they do
- Moving off and stopping safely, repeated until it feels less alien
- A short recap and a plan for lesson two
Being nervous is normal
Almost everyone is nervous first time. Tell your instructor — it changes how they pace the lesson. If anxiety is a bigger issue for you, some instructors specifically offer confidence-focused lessons that start slower and build up gradually.
Practical points people forget
Eat something beforehand, avoid a large amount of caffeine, and do not book your first lesson immediately after a night shift or a stressful day. Two hours is a long first lesson for most people; one hour is often plenty.
Common questions
- Do I need to know anything before my first lesson?
- No. Your instructor expects zero knowledge. Reading up on the cockpit drill and the main controls can reduce nerves, but nothing is required.
- Will I drive on the road in the first lesson?
- Usually yes, but in a quiet residential area at low speed. Your instructor will drive to and from that area if needed.
- Do I need to pass the theory test first?
- No. You need the theory test certificate before you can book a practical test, but you can start lessons straight away with a provisional licence.
